Colour Test Illustration 02: Gish Family Portrait.
So here we have the little Gish nuclear family. You're already familiar with Chelsea and Millie, but here are their parents; Alain Gish and Clover Gish.
Alain is a film director, primarily, although he's also the editor, storyboard artist and screenwriter on some of his films. He was born and raised on a farm in New Zealand before moving to Wellington in his late teens in order to attend film school. More details on the progression of his film career will be supplied at a later date.
Clover Gish is a musician and composer. She was born somewhere in the USA. Her musical career started in a band called Miss Machine, in which she was one of the two primary songwriters. She played guitar, keyboards, supplied various samples and sang lead vocals in that band. Nowadays Clover works mainly as a composer for various creative avenues and endeavours, such as films and experimental music theatre. She also plays shows as a solo artist here and there.
A young Alain and Clover first met during one of Miss Machine's lengthy North American tours. Alain had been hired by the band to film a documentary of this tour, y'see. And that's just about all the detail I shall go into about that at this juncture.
I composed this picture as though it were a photograph taken of the family posing in what is part of the foyer of their home. The Gish family live in an old nineteenth-century house, which is full of all manner of things. I'm currently drafting up the floor plans for the house, so Tom and I are both well aware of the layout of the house, its grounds, all its nooks & crannies and such. A fairly complicated and time-consuming task, as it turns out. Lots of fiddling with fiddly shit. But here's a wee glimpse of the house anyway.
As for those two paintings on the wall, you can find out more about them here [link] and here [link]
Clover painted the Hine painting. She has a few paintings that she's done of that particular deity hanging on various wall-spaces around the house. I suspect Clover happens to share my semi-obsession with spooky ol' "packs a wicked-mean set of Vagina Dentata" Hine-nui-te-pō. As for the monster-thing... I must confess, even I'm not sure where that came from at this stage.
Having a co-writer definitely takes a lot of the pressure off me too. And it's great to have Tom to bounce ideas off with. I seriously couldn't do this comic without him.
Chelsea and Millie originated primarily from me. The main characters, their design, their names (except for Clover, she was named by Tom, plus Millie's middle name was also supplied by him) and the basic premise all sprang from my mind. Having said that, ever since Tom has come aboard the comic has become very much 50/50 mine and his. So nowadays I consider it to be just as much his comic as it is mine.
It certainly is a cute surname. It's a shame there aren't more Gishs out there. Instead it's a world full of Smiths, Jones's and Browns (in Western society at least). Trivia: By complete coincidence, both Alain and Clover had the surname Gish before they got married to each other.
Aye, both kids are sprightly wee critters in splendid health. Although unfortunately Chelsea does suffer from lactose intolerance, much to her chagrin.
The kids have inherited Clover's ginger hair, pale skin and green eyes. So they've skipped their father's black hair* and blue eyes. However, Chelsea is destined to grow up lanky like her dad but Millie will end up being a lot more curvy. Moot points though, as Tom and I have no plans to explore Chelsea and Millie as adults in their future. Speaking for myself, I've done plenty of comics centred around adult characters, I'm all for having fun with my particular brand of childhood via a left-of-centre comic.
Also, Alain tends to spend more time outdoors than the rest of his family. He might have some Māori ancestry in him somewhere. But his skin tone is pretty fair really. It's just that he's set in contrast here with three very pale ginger people.
*I estimate that if C&M had black hair it would cut down the overall time it takes to do comics featuring them by at least a sixth. At least. Their hair is way more layered and time-consuming to paint than it looks.

It must feel damn good to have a non-solo project. Is this primarily your or Szewc's idea?
